About Holmescales
Holmescales is an independent riding and horse-care journal. We take our name from the old Holmescales Riding Centre at Old Hutton, near Kendal in Cumbria — a much-loved Lake District yard that has since closed. We keep the name going as a home for practical, honest guidance for British riders and horse owners.

What we cover
Three things: how to learn to ride and grow in confidence, how to care for and keep a horse without nasty financial surprises, and the kit and gear genuinely worth buying. Everything is written for UK riders, with British prices, standards and seasons in mind.
Editorial & affiliate policy
Our recommendations are chosen on merit. We use affiliate links — including to Amazon UK and riding directories — meaning we may earn a commission when you buy or book through us, but this never changes what we recommend or the order. Safety advice, especially on hats, always comes first. If we wouldn't suggest it to a friend at the yard, it isn't in the guide.
Who writes this
Guides are edited by Emma Hartley and a small group of lifelong riders and owners. Corrections and tips are always welcome via our contact page.
